Did you know that your oral health offers clues about your overall health — or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body?
Like other areas of the body, your mouth teems with bacteria — mostly harmless. But your mouth is the entry point to your digestive and respiratory tracts, and some of these bacteria can cause disease.
Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease.
There are many serious health concerns which have now been linked to gum disease and can be exacerbated by oral infections. These include diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and even complications during pregnancy.
When we think about health oral health is not the first to come to mind. It is time to change this given the scientific evidence coming forward on the importance of oral health on overall health.
Why are the ingredients we put into our oral care products important?
Our gums absorb what we put into ours mouth faster than our hands absorb lotion. Most commercially available toothpastes and mouthwashes contain harmful ingredient and toxins such as triclosan, fluoride, parabens, titanium dioxide and artificial flavours which are then daily absorbed by our mouths into our blood stream.
And while some natural brands tell us what not to use, they don’t offer ingredients backed by science to heal our mouths. We’re setting out to change that because the mouth is too critical to whole body health to ignore.
